Prices are rising for everybody in the country, and we should be forward-thinking in ways to combat this. Whether it's housing, utility rates, or how much we're paying for groceries and gas; It's time for our leadership to prioritize the wellbeing of Ohioans.
PROBLEMS TO BE SOLVED
During the pandemic housing market, elected officials neglected to object to inflated property reappraisals. Ohio forced massive valuation increases including a ~30% average hike ordered in Geauga County.
Ohio ratepayers are facing a massive spike in electricity costs. Recent capacity auctions cleared at record highs, up 22% from the previous auction. Much of our utility infrastructure is degrading as well.
Legislative changes intended to restructure property tax credits have inadvertently increased the tax burden on landlords, which inevitably trickles down to higher costs for renters who are already struggling to make ends meet.
Goals
Fight to introduce moving averages to Ohio's reappraisal formulas and advocate for straightforward property tax relief that benefits both homeowners and renters, ensuring that families aren't taxed out of their homes or apartments.
Push for stricter oversight of the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) to ensure utility companies help absorb the costs of inflation and data center demand, rather than billing historic 800% price hikes directly onto Ohio families.
Maintain a pragmatic approach to local energy projects and invest in updating our rural energy and broadband infrastructure.
The cost of living is about more than simply housing: I'd like to update Ohio's aging rural infrastructure. Times are too modern for families to sit in the dark during power outages due to inclement weather. Many of our farms don't have access to reliable broadband internet, leaving seniors, students, and telehealth workers disconnected. We can save money on the burial of powerlines and an improved internet infrastructure by facilitating joint contracts with existing roadwork.
The residents of Ashtabula and Geauga counties deserve a Representative who fights for their stability, financial or otherwise. When utility bills or property values skyrocket, we need a leader who will a present and accountable advocate for us.
Let's make Ohio a place where families can afford to live and work comfortably.
